Weeks 11–15 - Design Analysis

Week 11 - Design Analysis: Packaged Products

Divide into groups of 2–4 students.

Then each group analyzes 1 design using the following criteria:

  • Define the Message in one sentence
  • Define the Audience (target market): Sex, age range, geography, marital and family status, income, education, hobbies?
  • Define the Concept used to direct the design (youthful and fun, healthy, weight loss, teenage angst/edgy, natural/organic, back-to-basics/down-home/"the simple life")
  • Define the Style (design/art/photos) used to visualize the concept (example: to visualize "natural/organic butter" a designer might use a thin, light, san serif typeface on an off-white background and soft, slightly out-of-focus photos of the butter melting on corn-on-the-cob sitting on a picnic table on the back yard of a farmhouse (with a tire swing and tractor in the background).
  • Draw the Grid used to create the design/layout
  • Was the message delivered in small "chunks?" How many? Point them out
  • Typography: Which typeface was used? What sizes were used? Is it appropriate for the message? Why or why not?
  • Color: Define the color scheme. Is the color scheme appropriate? Why or why not?
  • Design Principles:Explain how 2 principles were used and achieved in the design.
  • Design Elements: Explain how 2 elements were used and achieved in the design.

Groups are to create a visual and present their finding to the class. All must speak.
