Week 2 -- 1/16/17

  • Topic: Message and Audience
  • Topic: Layout, Concept and Style
  • Analyze Marketing Material
  • Work on your icons

Second Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Critique as a class: Icons 10 thumbs and 2 roughs - (face-to-face) In class only
  • Work on your icons
Week 3 -- 1/23/17

First Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Topic: Typography
  • Topic: Art and Photos
  • Analyze Marketing Material
  • Work on your icons

Second Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Due: Present final 6 icons to class in groups
  • Introduce Behance. Create your own account and upload your icons project if you like it. Show your thumbs, roughs, and finals. Write an informative description too. You'll use these for your graphic design first-year reviews.
  • Introduce Project 2 - Pole Banner Design
    • Print and complete project evaluation sheet
    • What makes a good banner? What holds a banner suite together?
    • Stock Photography - Your Choices
    • Work on your banners
Week 4 -- 1/30/17

  • Topic: Color & Adobe Color

Week 5 -- 2/6/17

First Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Creativity-Boosting Exercise 1 - Progress Report
  • Answer in writing and print out:
    • What was your creativity-boosting exercise?
    • How many times have you tried the creativity-boosting exercise?
    • Explain how/where you used it.
    • Has the exercise increased or decreased your creativity?
    • What evidence do you have that your creativity was affected?
    • What would you change about this exercise going forward?

Second Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Critique as a class: Pole Banners 10 thumbs and 2 color roughs - (face-to-face) In class only
Week 6 -- 2/13/17

First Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Topic: Principles of Design (Emphasis, Unity, Balance, Rhythm)
  • Topic: Elements of Design (line, shape, texture, space, motion, value)
  • Analyze Marketing Material
  • Behance Specs

Second Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Work on your banners
Week 7 -- 2/20/17

First Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Topic: Packaging Analysis (Great Packaging Examples)
    In Groups, analyze the marketing material and present your findings to class

    Answer:
    • Message: What is being communicated?
    • Audience: Who is the message intended for?
    • Style: How is the design themed? The brand? 1950s? Natural/organic?
    • Grid: Draw the layout grid used to create the design layout.
    • Typefaces: How many different typefaces are used? Can you name them?
    • Color Scheme: Name the color scheme used.
    • Art & Photo direction: Art or photos? Close-ups? Family? Couples?
    • Principles: How is Emphasis, Unity, Balance, and Rhythm used?
    • What would you change to make it better?

Second Class Meeting (2 hrs)

  • Due: Present final Pole Banner design to class
  • Be prepared to answer these questions about your 3 banners
    • Message: What is being communicated?
    • Audience: Who is the message intended for?
    • Style: How is the design themed? The brand? 1950s? Natural/organic?
    • Grid: Draw the layout grid used to create the design layout.
    • Typefaces: How many different typefaces are used? Can you name them?
    • Color Scheme: Name the color scheme used.
    • Art & Photo direction: Art or photos? Close-ups? Family? Couples?
    • Principles: How is Emphasis, Unity, Balance, and Rhythm used?
  • Optional: Upload your banner project to your Behance portfolio. You'll use it in your first-year review.
    Show your thumbs, roughs, and finals. Write an informative description.
  • Introduce Project 3 - Website and Mobile Site Design
    • Print and complete project evaluation sheet

    --OR-- Downtown signage analysis, as weather permits
    In Groups, analyze a website (and it's mobile version) and present your findings to class

    Answer:
    • Message: What is being communicated?
    • Audience: Who is the message intended for?
    • Style: How is the design themed? The brand? 1950s? Natural/organic?
    • Grid: Draw the layout grid used to create the design layout.
    • Typefaces: How many different typefaces are used? Can you name them?
    • Color Scheme: Name the color scheme used.
    • Art & Photo direction: Art or photos? Close-ups? Family? Couples?
    • Principles: How is Emphasis, Unity, Balance, and Rhythm used?
    • What would you change to make it better?
