ePublishing Introduction
I decided to start this informational page in order to document and share my personal experiences ePublishing my own series of children's books, Edrick the Inventor.
Whenever I'm discussing my books during an author visit or book signing, I am usually asked, "How did you get your books onto the computer?" Or, "How would you recommend I electronically publish my book?" I'll try to answer these questions and more with the following web pages. I will also try to share the things I wish I had known when I started out.
Getting Started
I knew knowing about epub when I started thinking about delivering my children's books to personal hand-held e-readers. When I bought my first iPad, color picture books for children were fairly new. I had heard of Amazon's Kindle which was black and white, and Barnes and Noble had just released it's Nook color and started running ads promotion color children's books on it. I remember Go Dog Go was their title of choice.
When I downloaded my first children's ebooks on the iPad's iBooks e-reader software, I was impressed. I thought this may be a good venue to sell my full-color children's books as well.
I had a few concerns before I could begin. Mainly, I wanted to ensure that my illustrations would be clear and detailed enough to impress young readers. I also wanted young readers to be able to enlarge the type so they could identify words as they learned to read. Some of the sample ebooks I reviewed could do this—so I was hooked.
