  • Syllabus & Website
  • What does marketing and branding mean to a designer? Consistent delivery and use of a message, type, colors, and art/photos.
  • User experience vs. branding (you need both)
  • Brand Guidelines (discuss examples)
  • Open InDesign and begin creating a brand guidelines book for Western Technical College (InDesign for page layout, 11x8.5, rgb)

Class B

  • Work on brand guidelines book

Week 2 -- 9/11/17

  • Demo: How to create a high-resolution PDF
  • Due: Brand guidelines book

Week 3 -- 9/18/17

Class A

  • Introduce and begin Western's single source recycling bin sign project
  • Casey and Amy will speak to class

  • Find a paperboard box to re-design. Bring it to our next class

Week 7 -- 10/16/17

  • Demo/scan original packaging
  • Demo straightening and splicing 2 scans together in Photoshop
  • Demo die cut template drawing in Illustrator
  • Complete your final box or label template in illustrator

Week 8 -- 10/23/17

Class A

  • Demo: How to score, cut, fold and glue box mock up
  • Demo: Product photography
  • Demo: Masking
  • Continue work on your packaging redesign
  • Complete idea sketches of your package design - as needed

Class B

  • Complete the front and one side panel of your package on the computer - as close to final as possible

Week 9 -- 10/30/17

  • Individual critiques
  • Finalize your design for all six sides of your box

Week 10 - 11/6/17

Class A

  • Individual critiques
  • Finalize your design for all six sides of your box

Class B

  • Demo: 3D Mock up
  • Introduce Behance and its guidelines
  • What to put on Behance
    • Title
    • Description of your project (you write)
    • Pictures of your packaging mock up (as many views as you need to show all sides)
    • Illustrator template
    • Developmental sketches (optional—but employers like them)
    • Design your own branded headers (optional—but they look cool)
  • Finalize your packaging Behance presentation

Week 11 -- 11/13/17

Class A

  • Finalize your packaging Behance presentation
  • Follow my Behance page so I can view your final Behance project

Class B

  • Due: Final Packaging re-design
  • Present to class:
    • Your Behance presentation
    • Your final, assembled packaging mock up

Week 12 -- 11/20/17

(no classes Thursday and Friday, Thanksgiving Holiday)

Class A

  • Introduce and begin Web Advertising project
  • Work on your three web ads

Class B

  • Work on your three web ads

Week 13 -- 11/27/17

Class A

  • Work on your three web ads
  • Put your web ads on Behance

Class B

  • Present your final three web ads on Behance

Week 14 -- 12/4/17

Class A

  • Introduce and begin Product Review Video
  • Students sign their name in Illustrator and save the vector file to use
  • Demo how to make an animated title screen in class

Class B

  • Students shoot video footage of themselves reviewing a product (3–5 minutes) (in groups to save time?)
  • Demo how to composite animated title screen, video footage, subscribe to, and end credits

Week 15 -- 12/11/17

Class A

  • Demo how to composite animated title screen, video footage, subscribe to, and end credits

Class B

  • Demo how to composite animated title screen, video footage, subscribe to, and end credits
  • View student's final animated product review video
